‘And Just Like That’ Renewed for Season 2: Everything to Know About the ‘Sex and the City’ Spinoff’s Next Installment

Back for more! Sex and the City spinoff series And Just Like That is returning for a second season.

HBO Max announced the news on Tuesday, March 22, just over one month after the finale debuted. “I am delighted and excited to tell more stories about these vibrant, bold characters — played by these powerful, amazing actors,” showrunner Michael Patrick King said in a statement. “The fact is, we’re all thrilled. And Just Like That … our Sex life is back.”

Sarah Aubrey, head of original content for HBO Max, added: “We have been delighted by the cultural conversation generated by these characters and their stories, set in a world we already know and love so much. We are proud of the work Michael Patrick King and our wonderful writers, producers, cast and crew have done to bring these stories to the screen. We can’t wait for fans to see what’s in store for season two.”

Season 1 of And Just Like That premiered in December 2021, with Sarah Jessica ParkerCynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis reprising their roles as Carrie Bradshaw, Miranda Hobbes and Charlotte York, respectively. Kim Cattrall, who played Samantha Jones in the original series and two movies, famously did not return — and that was only the first roadblock the revival faced.

In September 2021, Willie Garson, who played Carrie’s friend Stanford Blatch, died of pancreatic cancer at age 57. The actor had already filmed a handful of AJLT episodes, but he was originally scheduled to appear in all 10. King rewrote Stanford’s story line after Garson’s death, with the character moving to Tokyo following his split from Anthony (Mario Cantone).

“Before I knew that Willie was sick and couldn’t complete it, Stanford was going to have a midlife crisis,” King told Variety in February. “Stanford’s character always had a borderline career as a manager, and we were like going to explore the fact that it wasn’t a real career. It was going to be Carrie and him, feeling the shifts.”

One week after the AJLT series premiere, multiple women accused Chris Noth of sexual assault. The actor denied the allegations, but a planned cameo for his character, Mr. Big, in the season finale was scrapped. (Mr. Big had already been killed off in the first episode.)

After the allegations surfaced, an insider told Us Weekly that Parker was “heartbroken” about the accusations. “She is fiercely protective of Carrie Bradshaw and livid that she and everyone else at the show has been put into this position,” the source explained. “It is not about the money, but rather her legacy. Carrie was all about helping women and now, under her watch, women are saying that they have been hurt.”

What Will the Fashion Look Like?

In October 2022, the Hocus Pocus star shared a first look at some of Carrie’s season 2 looks.

“@justlikethatmax First exterior. Streets of NY. X, SJ,” Parker wrote via Instagram alongside a snap of the wardrobe department putting the final touches on one of Carrie’s outfits. While the entire ensemble wasn’t visible, the photo showcased the pant leg of a blue jumpsuit, beige socks, a pigeon bag and a pair of brown python heels from the first SATC movie.

Will Aidan Return for Season 2?

One year after teasing fans by stating that he was reprising his role as Aidan for the inaugural season of And Just Like That — which he didn’t — John Corbett is set to return as Carrie’s fan-favorite ex-boyfriend over a multi-episode arc in season 2, Deadline reported in August 2022. Us Weekly has reached out to HBO Max for comment.

When asked directly whether Corbett would return, Parker gave up trying to hide the big news. “Well, you know, I can’t be, like, cryptic about it anymore,” she told Entertainment Tonight in September 2022.

When Will Filming Start?

In June 2022, Nicole Ari Parker revealed exclusively to Us that And Just Like That would resume filming in the fall. “I just found out,” she said, confirming that production would begin after Labor Day 2022. “So be on the lookout.” While she has been “sworn to secrecy” over the plot of the second season, the actress did confirm that “the fashion will be there and the fun will still be there,” when it returns to HBO Max.

Three months later, the Hocus Pocus star offered a glimpse at the first script of the season amid filming.

Will Carrie and Samantha Still Be Texting?

“Yes!” King promised during Variety’s Showrunners Sitdown with Kate Aurthur in June 2022.  The writer also shared his thoughts on what Carrie and Samantha may have discussed during their drink in Paris.

“It’s very funny, because every single one of the writers has a different version of what happened during that conversation,” the TV exec revealed. “So, I think there was some champagne. I think there was a grownup back and forth, and a love affair that they realized that something’s more important than being afraid to heal. I’m sure they had a great night. To me, they had a great night and things became resolved. Once Carrie let go of an old, old love, one of her current loves came back in.”

More Che?

King told Variety in June 2022 that Ramírez’s character Che will be an even bigger presence in the series moving forward.

“One of my burning passions about season 2 is Che,” the showrunner said. “I want to show the dimension of Che that people didn’t see, for whatever reason — because they were blinded, out of fear or terror. I want to show more of Che rather than less of Che. Like, really.”

The writer also noted that out of all the characters that exist on television, “what everybody’s concerned about is a nonbinary stand-up comic in the present day.”

Is Natasha Returning?

“It was so fun coming back,” Bridget Moynahan told Entertainment Tonight in April 2022 when asked about reprising her SATC role as Natasha Naginsky on the revival. “I think we should make a push to [executive producer] Michael Patrick King to bring [Natasha] back. Let’s start a campaign, everybody.”

Where Season 1 Ended

After recovering from the shock of Big’s death, Carrie warily stepped back into the dating pool. Her first try didn’t go that well, but in the season finale, she shared a smooch with her podcast producer Franklyn (Ivan Hernandez). Miranda struck up a relationship with nonbinary comedian Che Diaz (Sara Ramírez) and told her husband, Steve (David Eigenberg), that she wanted a divorce. In the final episode, she decided to finish her semester at Columbia University remotely and move to L.A. to be with Che. Charlotte, who spent the season learning how to cope with her child Rock’s gender identity, took Rock’s place at the They Mitzvah she and Harry (Evan Handler) organized.
