WWE Offered $1 Million For UK Promotion

WWE had its sights set on taking another major UK promotion under its umbrella.

Eighteen months after WWE introduced the United Kingdom Championship, the sports entertainment giant launched NXT UK to great excitement giving the UK wrestling scene its own tailor-made promotion and offering many of the stars of the scene a gateway to its main roster.

UK-based promotions such as PROGRESS and ICW signed deals with WWE which saw some of those promotions’ content appear on the WWE Network while those promotions were seen as feeder systems for NXT UK. Critics claim that NXT UK took the majority of talent away from the independent scene which caused a great deal of harm that saw the buzz around UK wrestling slowly fade away.

WWE tried to bring in another UK promotion

WrestlePurists noted that following Will Ospreay’s win over Yota Tsuji at Destruction in Kobe, the English star noted that WWE had offered $1 million to Revolution Pro Wrestling but the promotion turned it down.

RevPro has been partnered with New Japan Pro Wrestling for several years and Ospreay headlined its 11th anniversary show one night before AEW All In where he defeated Shingo Takagi. Following that bout, a match was made for NJPW Royal Quest III where Ospreay will put his IWGP UK Championship on the line against Zack Sabre Jr.

NXT UK closed its doors in September 2022 with an all-new NXT Europe meant to debut in 2023. That launch was postponed due to the takeover by Endeavor but there still seem to be plans for that new brand to eventually happen.
